Graphite on paper. I’ve been reluctant to use graphite, thinking charcoal would be easier to blend and shade. I was so wrong! Mechanical pencils make it so much easier to not get sloppy, and they glide so smoothly that it’s easy to stick to mid-tones to start, then going lighter or darker as needed. That’s been my biggest challenge (well, almost… getting correct proportions are a beast!): not painting myself into a corner by going too high-contrast too soon. I purchased an Asaro Head to use as my model, and I definitely learned a few things about facial structure.
